    Assessment of traffic impact on future cooperative driving systems: challenges and considerations

    Connect & Drive is a start-up project to develop a cooperative driving system and improve the traffic performance on Dutch highways. It consists of two interactive subsystems: cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) and connected cruise control (CCC). To assess the traffic performance, a traffic simulation model will be established for large-scale evaluation and providing feedbacks to system designs. This paper studies the factors determining the traffic performance and discusses challenges and difficulties to establish such a traffic simulation model

    Drivers' reactions to sudden braking by lead car under varying workload conditions; towards a driver support system

    At urban intersections drivers handle multiple tasks simultaneously, making urban driving a complex task. An advanced driver assistance system may support drivers in this specific driving task, but the design details of such a system need to be determined before they can be fully deployed. A driving simulator experiment was conducted to determine the relationship between different subtasks of driving at urban intersections. Participants completed four drives, each comprising 20 comparable intersections with different traffic situations and encountered one unexpected braking event during the experiment. The effects of varying levels of event urgency on the relationship between different driving subtasks were studied. Furthermore, the influence of workload on this relationship was determined by giving half of the subjects an additional cognitive task. After the lead car braked unexpectedly, participants reduced speed and increased headway depending on the urgency of the braking event. Depending on the workload, participants returned to the normal speed and headway again after a number of intersections. Participants experiencing a high-workload drove more smoothly, except for those who had experienced the most urgent unexpected event.     Interrelationships among predictors of automated vehicle acceptance: a structural equation modelling approach

    The study investigated the interrelationships between the UTAUT2 (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology) constructs predicting intentions to use driverless automated shuttles. Survey data was gathered from individuals physically experiencing an automated shuttle in a mixed traffic environment on public roads in Trikala (Greece) as part of the CityMobil2 project. Structural equation modelling showed that intentions to use automated shuttles were most strongly driven by hedonic motivation, followed by performance expectancy and social influence. Performance expectancy mediated the relationship between effort expectancy and behavioural intention. This means that people's expectations of how difficult automated shuttles will be to use and their intentions to use them can be explained through their expectations around how these vehicles will perform. Technology savviness was a negative moderator of the relationship between social influence and performance expectancy and facilitating conditions, respectively. Tech-savvy individuals rely less on their social networks to nurture their beliefs that automated shuttles are useful and to have the necessary resources to use automated shuttles. Car use was a negative predictor of the intention to use automated shuttles.     Evaluation of ADAS with a supported-driver model for desired allocation of tasks between human and technology performance

    Partly automated driving is relevant for solving mobility problems, but also causes concerns with respect to the driver‟s reliability in task performance. The supported driver model presented in this paper is therefore intended to answer the question, what type of support and in which circumstances, will enhance the driver‟s ability to control the vehicle. It became apparent that prerequisites for performing tasks differ per driving task‟s type and require different support. The possible support for each driving task‟s type, has been combined with support-types to reduce the error causations from each different performance level (i.e. knowledge-based, rule-based and skill-based performance). The allocation of support in relation to performance level and driving task‟s type resulted in a supported driver model and this model relates the requested circumstances to appropriate support types. Among three tested ADAS systems, semi-automated parking showed best allocation of support; converting the demanding parallel parking task into a rather routine-like operation

    A systematic review of task- shifting for HIV treatment and care in Africa

    BACKGROUND: Shortages of human resources for health (HRH) have severely hampered the rollout of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in sub-Saharan Africa. Current rollout models are hospital- and physician-intensive. Task shifting, or delegating tasks performed by physicians to staff with lower-level qualifications, is considered a means of expanding rollout in resource-poor or HRH-limited settings. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review. Medline, the Cochrane library, the Social Science Citation Index, and the South African National Health Research Database were searched with the following terms: task shift*, balance of care, non-physician clinicians, substitute health care worker, community care givers, primary healthcare teams, cadres, and nurs* HIV. We mined bibliographies and corresponded with authors for further results. Grey literature was searched online, and conference proceedings searched for abstracts. RESULTS: We found 2960 articles, of which 84 were included in the core review. 51 reported outcomes, including research from 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The most common intervention studied was the delegation of tasks (especially initiating and monitoring HAART) from doctors to nurses and other non-physician clinicians. Five studies showed increased access to HAART through expanded clinical capacity; two concluded task shifting is cost effective; 9 showed staff equal or better quality of care; studies on non-physician clinician agreement with physician decisions was mixed, with the majority showing good agreement. CONCLUSIONS: Task shifting is an effective strategy for addressing shortages of HRH in HIV treatment and care. Task shifting offers high-quality, cost-effective care to more patients than a physician-centered model. The main challenges to implementation include adequate and sustainable training, support and pay for staff in new roles, the integration of new members into healthcare teams, and the compliance of regulatory bodies. Task shifting should be considered for careful implementation where HRH shortages threaten rollout programmes
